This week was full! We talked and read about different careers we might have as we grow up. We learned that we have jobs to earn money to buy things we want and need for our families. We also learned the difference between goods and services. We also got to talk to some fabulous volunteers who shared about their jobs and the goods and services they provide to people. Thank you so much for those who could join us in our classroom. I have a few who may be making us a quick video to share next week. Thank you for this!
This week we reviewed subtraction in math as well. We are good at recognizing the subtraction symbol and know that our numbers will get smaller when we use it. Some of us have even noticed how addition and subtraction are related...wowzers! We love playing games with our peers as well. We honed our skills playing math games while practicing how to use kind words. We are amazing! In Language this week we have practiced some blending/reading both sight words and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant words such as bat, tub, sit...). We LOVE playing I Have, Who Has and the all around favorite, FiddleSticks or Pop. We talked about the words "help" and "too". Next week we will be cleaning up our room, organizing our things, and coming home with many supplies. I will try to space this out so it isn't all in one day. We also have many fun activities planned for the great outdoors. Please keep the weather in mind...this past week has shown how goofy it can be! Please find some activities planned below: Tuesday, June 1st: 8:45-10:15 Kindergarten Play Day -outside activities for all! 12:15 Outside visit from Albany Fire Department Truck and Firefighter (Thank you Mr. Kevin!!) Wednesday, June 2nd: Walk to Albany Public Library for an outside presentation! Thursday, June 3rd: 9:15 Scavenger Book Read Aloud--walk with us and read a fun book! 1:30-2:15 All School Bingo I hope you all enjoy a very happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend!

The days have really gotten nice and warm and are perfect for learning and playing outside. Thank you for making sure your Kinder is prepared for the day!
Last week we did spend some extra time outside as well as doing some learning outside. We have journaled outside and love it! We have been watching our seeds grow and just finished up our Living and Non-Living unit in Science. We are now moving on to Social Studies, and talking about careers we might like and why we work. We will bring up again the concept of wants and needs, as well as goods and services. We would LOVE to hear from you and what you do as your "job". Please contact me to make a time to visit with our class via Google Meet to share your job! In Language we are practicing our vowel sounds. Some of us are mixing up the Ee sound with the Ii sound. This might be a game you can play at home. How many rhyming words/word families (kit, fit, sit, etc.) can you think of with your Kinder? You make the rules--real words only or do nonsense words count? We are getting good at retelling a story after we read it. This is a very important skill to have moving forward. Try asking your Kinder to retell the important parts of the story, or take turns! In Math we have been reviewing concepts. We will review addition, subtraction, number grids, and general number sense. Playing these games with your Kinder over the summer will really benefit their base of knowledge. Games like Monster Squeeze or Top It (we knew it as War) is excellent. You can even play Top It by adding two cards together to see who has the largest (or smallest) sum. If you think you may want some ideas for your Kinder to work on over the summer, please let me know! These next few weeks will fly by! Thank you for keeping up to date and helping with this last big transition. While I have expressed sadness, we try to keep the attitude light and positive about Kindergarten being over. We talk about saying hi to me in the hallway next fall or this summer. Please let me know if there are any questions! The Best Thing About My Mom is…. …she loves me! -Abel …that she loves me! -Ava …she does crafts with me! -Bella … she does crafts with me! -Emily ...that she lets me eat 2 packs of fruit snacks. -Riley H. ...she lets me eat ice cream with her! -Tacoda ...she gives ten buckets of cotton candy! -Elisa … that she loves me! -Harper … she takes me to Chucky Cheese! -Amelia M. ...she takes me to the bakery! -Amelia N. ...she lets me drive the car on gravel roads! -Carter …she lets me have cold lunches a bunch of times. Actually, she loves me! -Macie ... that she takes care of me when I’m sick! -Wyatt … she helps me! -Peyton …she loves me! -Gavin …that she lets me do everything! -Jacob … that she tucks me in! -Ben ...flowers? Riley M. .... flowers Wyatt … water. Shani We have wrapped up our April!
Last week we talked about the letters Gg and Ww and the words "they" and "of". We have gotten good at writing sentences and knowing when Mrs. Boyer makes a mistake! ;) We enjoyed making 3d shapes with toothpicks and play dough, and going on a shape hunt to see what kinds of 3d shapes we could see in our school. We talked about personal safety, and what to do in various situations where we may not feel safe. Please go through this booklet with your child and make a plan on what to do if different scenarios pop up. The Kinders love to share what they know, and are eager to know how they can feel safe. This week we practiced the letters and sounds of Vv and Xx. We practiced the words "said" and "want". We worked very hard on learning about living and non-living things. Ask us what living things need and how we can tell if things are non-living! Next week we will continue what we know about living and non-living while talking about lifecycles. We will closely look at the lifecycle of a frog. We had a tadpole in our classroom, but Bunny has quickly changed into a frog. We will learn the different stages of a frogs life cycle. In Math this week we reviewed numbers in the number grid and various ways of counting. We will continue to review numbers next week by counting back from various places on the number grid. Our Book Fair will be up and running on May 3rd! A flyer came home this week sharing a bit more about it. We guessed how many items were in a container to try and win a prize from the book fair! We talked that we probably won't win, but it sure is fun to try! Thank you for continuing to have layers for your Kinder. The mornings are so chilly and then the temp can get very warm in the afternoon. It is appreciated! On Thursday, May 6th Mr. Johnson will take us to the High School track for PE. Please make sure your Kinder has a water bottle that day! Thank you! My goodness, things are going quickly!
Last week we learned about the short letter Uu and the words "for" and "have". We enjoyed making some pushpin art in the shape of umbrellas, practicing our rhyming, ordering numbers, and we loved playing Fiddlesticks with our sight words! We did clean out our Book Boxes and decided to send home our first and last name practice, and our number writing. Feel free to have your Kinder practice at home as well. We continue to read carefully, practicing blending our words. We are getting better and better at writing our words as well and writing the sounds that we hear in words. I will begin doing some of our final assessments. I did do some blending today and we are AMAZING! We have learned so much this year! In Math last week we practiced our numbers in the twenties and talked about what was more and less. We also learned some new games. We played Monster Squeeze and Missing Number. This week we will play Top It (you may remember this as "War"). We are practicing using our good sports skills as well. This week we are learning the letters and sounds of both Gg and Ww. We are also learning the words "they" and "of". We are learning most of this in small group settings. Feel free to make a list at home of words that start with these sounds! We will write sentences this week, and we will talk about pets this week. If you have a photo of a pet you would like to share send it to me and we can show the class! In Math this week we are revisiting 3D shapes. We are trying to remember the words sphere, cylinder, cone, cube and are even talking about rectangular and triangular prisms as well as pyramids. Whew! Today we played a game with those shapes and will be making shape sculptures later this week. This week we will be talking about personal safety. We will talk a lot about feelings and being safe. We will eventually bring up what is appropriate touch and what is inappropriate. We will also practice what to do in various situations and stranger safety. Ask your Kinder what we talk about each day. Today we talked about who makes us feel safe and where we feel safe. What a fun and amazing week!
Our very own AHS Girls Basketball team have played so well this season! They have made it to the Championship game on Friday, and we are all hoping they do well! Our class has been cheering on the Huskies and we have made many posters to send with Coach Kuhn. The girls are able to read our posters and love to see them, but I think we have enjoyed making them even more! This week we have reviewed all of our sight words and our letters/sounds. We have been working hard during our rotation time in Language and have shown that we can be responsible while working. I am so impressed with our handwriting! We have been working hard and it really shows! When writing at home, continue to encourage your Kinder to start at the top when forming letters. Also, when sounding out words it is very appropriate to misspell words, as long as the sound is represented (duk for duck). Thank you for continuing your kiddo's learning at home. We have loved doing mini experiments this week when learning about the senses. We observed our pupils shrinking and enlarging in changes of light. Ask us about it! We took a gander at optical illusions, and playing listening games to guess the sound. Because of our restrictions this year, I won't be doing a taste test or a smell test in school, but feel free to do these at home! I will share some fun ideas on the bottom of the post for you. I got some of them from our books about the 5 senses by Sally Hewitt. Have fun! We have certainly picked up measurement like rock stars! We have enjoyed measuring different items by length and height this week. We learned we can measure with a variety of items, such as feet, hands, cubes and bears. Use toy cars or legos to measure the lengths of things at home! School will be dismissed a bit early tomorrow so we can support our Huskies. Buses leave at 1:15. We had a chance to watch them on the "big" screen on Tuesday. What a cheering section we had going! We were looking for the players we knew, classmates in the crowd, and coaches we knew. ALL of us were cheering when the girls earned points. Enjoy your weekend, and travel safely to those who will be attending the game! Mini Experiments for the 5 Senses at Home Find several items. Let your Kinder look at them for several seconds, then cover them up. What can you remember (items, color, shape)? To see your pupils change size, close your eyes for a minute then open them and look in a mirror. Look out the window in daylight, then look in the mirror. What do you notice? Stretch some plastic wrap over a bowl (this is like your eardrum). Sprinkle rice on top. Bang a baking pan with a wooden spoon just above it. Watch the sound waves vibrate the plastic wrap and make the rice jump. Ask your Kinder to shut his/her eyes. Tiptoe around them, then stop and make a tiny noise. Can your Kinder point to where you are by listening? Put some items (lemon slices, chocolate, cheese, soap, toothpaste, etc) into plastic containers. Cover the containers with circles of a card punched with holes. Move the containers around and sniff the lids. Can your Kinder guess the smells? Put some smelly cheese (or anything with a strong smell) on a plate. Hide it in a room. Can your Kinder find the smelly item just by sniffing it out? Have a taste test! Try something sweet, sour, bitter (coffee, orange rind, unsweetened chocolate), and salty. Have your camera ready for this! What did your Kinder like best? Least? Have your Kinder plug their nose while they eat. How does smell affect the taste? Put some different items in a hat. Without looking, can your Kinder guess what the items are just by using their sense of touch? Use some paper and crayons to make rubbings over different textures (carpet, hard floors, tile, etc). Do the rubbings look like the item feels? Wow! It is hard to believe only 2 months and some days of school left. We have been learning so much!
Thanks to all of us for wearing purple to support our Huskies Girls Basketball Team! They won their game last night and are off to the semi-finals! We like to think we helped by all our kind words and posters we sent with them. We will plan on making more tomorrow to send with them on their game on Tuesday. I would say it is safe to wear purple on Tuesday to show our Purple Pride and help with those girls (and coaches) well! This week we have been learning the letters and sounds of Kk and ck. We have been working hard on our handwriting, can you tell at home? I sure can here at school! I can also see a difference sounding out words...our Heggerty lessons have really helped with that! We have also worked on two new sight words this week, "she" and "was". We have been learning new words games that help us with our sight words. We have been writing Easter Words, and even Easter Number Sentences. Write the room is one of our favorite activities! We have been working on our words during language, and have been practicing on doing this independently. We are learning to use our time wisely and to get right to work. Our last bin activity has been working on beginning sounds. Because we enjoy these activities and we have limited time, we will plan the same bin activities next week as well. In Math this week we have been focusing on our number writing. We are more conscious of what each number should look like....we are rockstars!! We have also been utilizing a program on our iPads to help us break into small groups. It is called Happy Numbers and teaches us concepts at our level. We have just touched a bit on our 5 senses, but plan to visit this idea more next week. We will learn about each sense and do some experiments. Don't forget to ask us about it! We have cleaned up after our messy leprechauns and have started a new week. We are LOVING learning about animals in their habitats! We have been learning about a habitat a day and what kinds of animals live there. During Language Arts this week, we share what we know and have an opportunity to build an animal in it's habitat with playdough. We are also learning the letters and sounds of Bb and Ll and the sight words "is" and "little". We are starting to meet in smaller groups during language. We are working so hard to use the top, medial, and bottom handwriting lines when we write letters. We are practicing sitting up tall with our bellybuttons to the table and our feet flat on the floor. We are using a helper hand to hold our paper steady and prevent it from sliding.
We are becoming more independent with our learning in language arts! We have a variety of activities during language that allow us to work at our own pace and I am seeing some very hard, respectful workers. We have been earning bucketfillers like you wouldn't believe! We got some great books from our friend Anthony--thank you Anthony! They celebrate how unique we are as kiddos. We are learning that we are not all the same and we learn at different rates. We have decided we are glad for this! In Math this week we are practicing number writing and learning games to help us remember our tally marks. We are learning it is important to put spaces between our numbers so they can be easily read and they can be read correctly. This can be tricky for some of us, but gentle reminders are all it takes. Thank you for having warm clothing for us on the playground! At this time of year, layers work best. We often will be able to take off coats outside (like yesterday) if we have long sleeves, but can get warm in PE with long sleeves. If you know your kiddo tend to "run warm", I suggest having them wear short sleeves with a sweatshirt and a lighter jacket now that the weather has warmed up. Coats with hoods are still good for our rainy days. If I caught a leprechaun, I would ask him/her for....
...a flying mansion with 1,000 swimming pools and a driving camper. -Wyatt ...gold to buy a boat. -Tacoda ...magic to make rainbows. -Ava ...magic to make rainbows. -Elisa ...gold. I would buy a four-wheeler because I don't have one. -Macie ...100 bucks to buy a mermaid reveal. -Shani ... money. I would buy a nerf gun. -Riley H. ... gold. I would buy a HUGE unicorn and live happily every after! -Bella ... gold. I would eat all the chocolate inside. -Riley M. ... to turn me into a leprechaun forever. -Emily ... magic to go anywhere I want. To go to Grandma's and Grandpa's even. -Abel ...magic power give me whatever I ask for and gold. -Amelia N. ...magic! Whatever kind of magic. -Amelia M. ...gold to put in my piggy bank. -Harper ...a pot of gold. I would spend it on a pet wiener dog. -Gavin ...cotton candy! -Ben ...a car, a kids meal, and a beaver gift. -Emitt |
