Hello All!
This week we are eagerly awaiting St. Patrick's Day! We have read a bit about leprechauns and are trying to trap a leprechaun. Some of us would like to ask for gold, and some of us would like the leprechaun to come live with us. We made a plan, and discovered that when we began building, we may have needed to change our plan. Most of us made videos in Seesaw explaining our traps! This week we are learning the letters and sounds of both Ff and Rr. We will be practicing the words "he" and "with". From here on out, we will be introducing two words and letters per week. This is a fast pace, so please review our letters and (especially) words at home. We have also tried a new format so we can meet with the teacher every day. We will work independently on tasks while Mrs. Boyer is meeting with students and have "mini" lessons in-between our tasks. We are practicing letter formation, the letter sounds, our sight words, and often a math or a social/science/health task. We have taken to this like Rock Stars! This week we are also learning about habitats: what they are and why they may be different. We will take a close look at these and make a model of an animal habitat next week. We are loving this! We read a great book today Whose Home Is This? in which we had to guess what animal lived in what home based on clues...so fun! In Math this week we are learning about tally marks. We are learning how to make them and how to read them. We are learning that this is another way in which we can represent numbers. The trickiest part is remembering that "five takes a dive". Ask us to show you at home how we tally! Perhaps you can tally what everyone's favorite color is, or perhaps favorite vegetable? We did a WONDERFUL job smiling today for our Spring Photos!! One photo will come home with your child next week along with a variety of backgrounds. You may choose to purchase photos with the background of your choice. If you don't want any, no worries. This is a great fundraiser for our school. Ludwig Photography gives our school $2.50 for each photo taken. Thank you Ludwig Photography!!

Well, we are super busy anyways. :)
We enjoyed the first week of March by dressing up for Read Across America. We celebrated well known and new authors and illustrators. Many of us may choose to grow up to be an author and/or illustrator! We had fun making many rhymes last week as well as making Fox in Sox puppets! We practiced many different math concepts while learning about Theodore Geisle (you might know him as Dr. Seuss). This week we are learning the letters and sounds of Ee and the word "are". This one tends to be tricky for us since Ee has many different sounds. We have practiced the sound of /e/ in the middle and the beginning of words. We have been practicing writing sentences as well. We double check that we are writing using an uppercase letter, spaces, and punctuation. This will take time so any gentle reminders are appreciated. In addition, we are practicing writing the sounds we hear in words even if it isn't "spelled" correctly. In Math we have been learning about subtraction this week. We are learning that numbers get smaller/less when we subtract. We are also using the words minus and take away. We have been playing the Disappearing Train Game as well and are really working on using our good sport words. Next week we will have a class photo done as well as Spring Photos. Watch your child's BEE folder for some info on that! With the snow coming today, please keep an eye on the weather. Thanks to those who sent boots today (we didn't end up going out, but it was nice to have them ready) and hats. We have had some direction on wearing shorts. We are asking that it be at least 40 degrees to wear shorts outside. This may mean bringing with a pair of sweatpants to pull over shorts in case it cools off. Thank you! What a fun week! Kinders were so, so excited to celebrate the 100th Day of School this week! We started the day Monday with a book, and counted A LOT! We made hats to celebrate and we wrote about what we would do when we were 100 years old. Such great illustrations to match this! We continue to do activities that celebrate the number 100 all week. We are really enjoying stacking 100 cups and finding creative ways to make structures with them. We are practicing writing our numbers to 100...some of us are so close! We have been counting to 100 using stickers and have been counting by ones each day.
We continue to review the letters and sounds that we know. We even tried to pick out middle sounds out of words. We are doing an amazing job hearing those sounds! We are also practicing writing sentences. We practice using spaces and punctuation. As we get more confident, you will see us write words on our own. Many of us like the support when we sound out and write words. Remember, when writing words at home, we do not worry about spelling. We will learn that in first grade. Right now, we want to build confidence by writing only the sounds that we hear. That confidence wanes when we are often corrected. The more we read and write, the more the words will look "funny" and we will learn the editing process to correct our errors. In Math we are working on addition as well as counting by fives. We continue to practice counting back from 20 and love a video on You Tube called The Count Back Cat :). Go ahead and practice counting when you are driving or climbing/decending stairs! Ask your Kinder what Mr. Johnson had for us in PE today!!! The kiddos were SOO excited when we walked into gym! He had set out an amazing obstacle course, with lots of opportunity to move our bodies. So fun! This week we continue to learn about dental health. We will take a virtual field trip to a dentist office tomorrow. We made a giant toothbrush to help us remember to brush our teeth. Ask us what helps keep our teeth healthy! Remember, Friday is a learn from home day. Please have your Kinder return their completed work on Monday. They can log into Seesaw to see what Mr. Johnson has for them. Love is..... ...loving somebody. -Bella ...doing what somebody wants you to do. -Ava ...L-O-V-E. It's like, you love somebody. -Carter ...something that makes people happy. -Macie ...when you like somebody but instead of saying you like them, you say you love them. -Wyatt ...a heart. -Elisa ...hugs. -Harper ...liking a person. -Riley ...snuggling Mom and Dad. -Emily ...something that you do when you love somebody. -Amelia N. ...giving hugs. -Emitt ...spending time with someone. -Amelia M. ...being kind to someone. -Tacoda ...giving a heart. -Peyton ...saying "I love you". -Able ...giving presents. -Gavin ...playing tackle football. -Jacob ...loving people! -Shani ...wrestling outside. -Ben Brrr! We were able to get outside yesterday and enjoy sledding down the small hill. Today we were indoors for recess. We had a dance party from the choices on Go Noodle and then a bit of extra time to play and work together.
We practiced the middle sounds of o today, and we did very well! It is tricky to hear the middle sounds of words, but those Heggerty videos are really helping us hear that sound and in turn, helping us become confident with writing words. We will continue to practice our vowels next week and our sight words. We did some adding today and some coloring by ten frame yesterday. We had to accomplish more than one step for math yesterday and, while we completed our work, it was tricky for some of us. We will continue to add these types of activities until we find them easier. Many of us felt our adding today was easy! We introduced the plus sign and the equal sign. We then discussed how adding makes numbers get larger or grow. We were so excited to have PE today! You will have to ask us what game we played! It was so fun to see all these happy kiddos running and "flushing" our friends! Ask us about it! We shared things we love to do and we learned about Arctic animals today. Ask us what we know about them! We also finished up our unit on United States symbols. I was so impressed how many kiddos remembered so many symbols! Ask them what they know or their favorite symbol. Many were excited to share that they had visited some of these sites or knew you had. Make sure to share your adventures with them! Stay warm! We are off to a very busy month! Keep your calendars close, as there is a bunch happening! This week we are learning about the letter Oo. We are practicing it as having the short o sound, but do talk a bit about it making the long o sound as well. Our work of the week is "you". During Math this week we will be reviewing some math concepts while having fun with some groundhog activities. Yesterday we predicted whether Punxsutawney Phil would predict spring around the corner or 6 more weeks of winter. We graphed this as a class and were excited to hear what he chose this morning. We also learned a bit about groundhogs. Today we saw Phil come out of his burrow and predict 6 more weeks of winter. We acted a bit as groundhogs today ourselves coming into and out of our classroom. Ask your Kinder what our door looked like! We even created some groundhogs with which to decorate the hallway! The remainder of the week we will be talking about US symbols and have been sharing what we know about them. We have been looking a lot at the map and globes and LOVE to see where we live and where our families have been. We received another set of masks for each classroom and today we "tie dyed" them using sharpies and rubbing alcohol. All that is left to do is to set the color and give them a wash. They should be ready for the Kinders tomorrow. Please note that we will be in school 5 days this week...yay! We spent some extra time outside knowing the end of the week will be very cold. Thank you again for making sure your Kinders have all the clothes they need for outdoors! As a reminder, please complete any valentines and boxes and send them in by Monday of next week, February 8th. I have a corner in which I am collecting all that come in. February is I Love to Read Month! Each classroom is challenged to read at least one book by an author's name beginning with each letter of the alphabet (except Q and X). We have read 4 books that count so far, and are looking forward to this task! There are also extra challenges that we will try to complete. Ms. Eibensteiner does an amazing job each year making this a fun month in which to read! Some kiddos have asked for some copies of the alphabet so you can try this challenge as a family at home. This is purely for fun and does not need to return to school! Enjoy! I cannot get over how quickly things are going! Today we packed up our supplies for some learning at home tomorrow morning. I didn't send chargers, in general, since everyone should be at 100 percent (and I didn't forget any this time! ;) ) and that should be enough to get you through tomorrow. Headphones should have come home, as well as a purple folder with the items you need.
Also, you should see some artwork come home. The Kinders made some Grumpy Monkeys with Mrs. Olson and used the medium of oil pastels. They were so fun to see and we put them in the hallway for a bit. We continued to practice the sounds of Cc and the word go this week. We practiced our 3d shapes and went on a shape hunt to find them. We realized that these shapes are found all over and drew real-life examples of 3d shapes. We will wrap up our unit on Minnesota tomorrow. We will talk about some other symbols of the state tomorrow, and we will talk a bit about Paul Bunyan. We continue to practice our sounds, our syllables, and where in a word we hear sounds. You will find in your Kinder's BEE folder a board of activities. This is in the event of a "snow" day and we are unable to get devices home. There are some activities for you to do on both sides. Again, please don't worry about this in case school is cancelled due to bad weather. We have had a GREAT start to the week! We came into school on Monday ready for learning. This week we are learning about the letter Cc and the sound /k/. We have made a list of things that begin with Cc or have the /k/ sound in them. We have come up with some great things! We talk about the different sounds that Cc can make, but we are focusing on the hard Cc sound. We are also learning about the word "go" this week. We know it is easy for us to write since it only has 2 letters!
During our Tray Time (our version of Centers this year) we are practicing ABC order and beginning sounds with the help of some pengins, we are learning about our state of Minnesota by writing the room. We are learning about our state symbols and are so excited since many of us are familiar with them. We are reading and coloring a book to take home. Read it with us! It's called Let's Go To The Park and has some repeating words for us to read, in addition to the pictures for added support. We still focus on using our fingers to help us read and will do this until we have increased our reading levels. Lastly, for Tray Time, we are making shapes with playdough and toothpicks. Many of us are reviewing our 2d shapes, but we will be transitioning and turning some of those into 3d shapes. It is so fun to see how excited we are to learn! We have been learning about 3d shapes (cube, cylinder, etc), or solid shapes. We have been calling 2d shapes (circle, triangle, etc) "flat" shapes. Today we made a booklet. Ask your Kinder to be your teacher, sharing what they know! We had a BLAST sledding today! The temp was above 10 and the sun was shining bright. We were out for 45 minutes and tromped up the sledding hill quite a few times! You should have some good sleepers tonight! We try to teach the Kinders that sledding down a hill is like sharing a slide. Once we are at the bottom, we move the side to climb the hill/ladder. We go down separately and not too close together. We also talked about what to do if we come too close to another (BAIL!!). There were no collisions today-for which we are all grateful-and we were pretty quiet as we packed up. Thank you for sending those warm socks and extra clothes just in case. Just a reminder that some of us our missing our headphones. If you see them at home, please send them in tomorrow! Thank you! |
